More than 80 coal mining projects and permits were stalled last year as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sought to increase its review on Appalachian surface mining practices. The new permit, issued to permit to Coal-Mac Inc. for the Pine Creek Surface Mine project in Logan County, W. Va., includes significant changes to the original application. The new plan was reached with the cooperation of the company completing the project, EPA said.
Changes and special conditions include a reduction of stream impacts and valley fills, plans to protect water quality around the project, and includes enhanced mitigation provisions.
The new permit is in accordance with new EPA regulations and guidance for surface coal mines issue din April.
