Old cargo ship to leave Suisun Bay for recycling, disposal

March 18 -- Another vessel is set to leave the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, according to the federal Maritime Administration.

The Winthrop Victory, a cargo ship built in World War II, will leave the reserve fleet, housed near San Francisco, today, MARAD said. First, the ship heads to BAE Systems San Francisco Ship Repair, where it will be cleaned of marine growth and loose exterior paint. Then, with its fellow reserve fleet ship the Rider Victory, the cargo ship will be towed to Brownsville, Texas, for recycling and disposal.

The Winthrop Victory is the last Victory ship in the Suisun Bay and is the fourth ship to leave the fleet since Oct. 22. As of Feb. 1, MARAD listed 67 vessels as part of the Reserve Fleet.

The tanker ship, the Mission Santa Ynez, is set to leave the bay March 31, MARAD said.
