The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is requesting that the county´s common pleas court order owners of A&L Salvage landfill in Lisbon to cover the 42-acre site with 12 additional inches of soil, the Ohio EPA said.
The agency alleges the C&D landfill has experienced "nuisance conditions impacting residents living around" the site. They allegedly include nuisance hydrogen sulfide odors leaving the landfill.
The landfill stopped operating in February 2009, the state said.
"The situation cannot continue as is," Ohio EPA Director Chris Korleski said. "The odors need to be stopped and the landfill needs to be properly stabilized and closed once and for all."
