Catalyst Paper to lay off 100 people due to economy

May 27 -- Catalyst Paper, with holdings that include a recycled-based newsprint mill and a de-inked pulp plant, is laying off about 100 people to deal with problems in the paper industry.

The Richmond, British Columbia-based company said about 40% of the company´s overall production capacity is currently idled.

"This is an exceptionally difficult time in the industry and current market conditions cannot support the current staffing level," said Richard Garneau, president and CEO. "The steps we are taking today will continue to bring costs down as we strive to put in place the lean manufacturing structure necessary for what could be a smaller paper market going forward."

Catalyst operates a total of five paper mills, including one in Snowflake, Ariz., that makes 100% recycled newsprint. The company also has a de-inked pulp plant in Coquitlam, B.C.
