7. Detroit does not have a typical residential recycling program. Detroit provides weekly residential waste and monthly bulky waste collection for 312,770 households. In 2005, Detroit disposed of a majority of the 482,000 tons of municipal solid waste it collected at the Greater Resource Recovery Facility, which combusts waste to produce steam and electricity for sale to Detroit Thermal.
