New prescription drug disposal company opens in Ohio

Jan. 25 -- Two Ohio men have started a new prescription drug disposal company aimed at keeping unused and expired drugs out of the water supply.

According to the EPA, the agency has found pharmaceuticals throughout the nation´s water supplies, and is conducting further testing to see what impact these substances are having on the environment and human health.

Pharmacist Brian Deryck and chemical engineer John Heaton have started RXDisposal Solutions LLC in Uniontown, Ohio. The company´s pharmaceutical disposal system turns discarded drugs into an insoluble solid mass. The system prevents leaching of chemicals into groundwater supply, Heaton said.

Company representatives said the system would be of interest to hospice care and nursing home clients, along with other health care organizations.
