Distribution center to divert 30,000 tons of packaging

March 2 -- A new program at the worldīs largest food distribution center is aimed at diverting 30,000 tons of corrugated packaging from landfills each year.

The effort at the Hunts Point food distribution center in New York is designed to eliminate the use of wax-coated boxes, which canīt be recycled, through a switch to recyclable packaging.

Global Green USA, an environmental group, is launching the green packaging program through its Coalition for Resource Recovery. Interstate Container, a packaging maker, and Mountaire, the sixth largest poultry company in the country, are conducting field tests on boxes used to ship wholesale poultry through the site.
