Big, ailing obstacle ahead

As we look ahead to 2009, it´s impossible to ignore the sick elephant lying across the path in front of us. It goes without saying that our ailing economy is the first, last and virtually only thing on every business person´s mind as we contemplate the year ahead.

The recession promises tough times for just about every sector this publication covers -- recycling and scrap, solid waste, construction, manufacturing, transportation, energy -- and for most other business segments as well. The experts say this economic malaise is likely to drag on for a while, and it will surely test everyone´s will and spirit.

But there will just as surely be an end to this downturn eventually, maybe this year, maybe later. And in the meantime, we´re likely to see some silver linings. Renewable energy is expected to fare well, relatively speaking. Solid waste has always shown resilience in tough economic times. Water and wastewater infrastructure improvements are likely forthcoming. And if the plans being laid by President-elect Obama succeed, the green energy programs he espouses will create many new jobs and act as a catalyst to help put the economy back on track.

The Obama regime takes the reins in Washington in two weeks. The sick elephant awaits them.
