South Carolina cement plant to use solid waste as fuel

Feb. 21 -- A South Carolina cement plant has begun using nonhazardous solid waste as fuel at its facility in Holly Hill.

The plant is owned by Holcim Inc., one of the world´s leading cement suppliers.

The waste, which will include plastics, oil absorbents, wood and paint solids, will supplement the use of fossil fuels to power its cement kiln. The materials must have heat values of at least 5,000 Btus, said Mario Romero, president of Energis LLC, a subsidiary of Holcim. Energis operates the alternative fuels and raw material program at the Holly Hill plant.

The program will divert waste from landfills while reducing the company´s reliance on fossil fuels.

Holcim is based in Waltham, Mass., while Energis´ headquarters is in Dundee, Mich.
