FedEx activates solar power system at Oakland airport

Aug. 10 -- FedEx Corp. activated California´s largest solar power installation Aug. 9 at its hub at Oakland International Airport.

The 904-kilowatt system will provide 80 percent of the hub´s energy needs, and at its peak will produce the equivalent of the power 900 homes would use during the day. The system, which will reduce emissions from fossil fuel power plants., will transfer energy to the utility grid during periods when it generates more power than the facility needs.

More than 300,000 solar cells installed into 5,769 photovoltaic modules cover almost all 81,000 square feet of roof covering the two buildings that make up the facility.
