U.S. EPA agrees to largest green power contract to date

Dec. 23 -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has completed its largest green power purchase to date, the agency said Dec. 22.

It finalized a three-year contract with Unicoi Energy Services of Marietta, Ga. to provide the agency’s facilities in Research Triangle Park, N.C. with 100 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually. It is the equivalent of the energy 3,680 homes consume each year.

The EPA buys more than 220 million kilowatt-hours of green power for 26 of its facilities, laboratories and offices throughout the country. Renewable energy accounts for 77 percent of the agency’s national electricity consumption.
