Alaskan salmon cannery faces fine for discharges

Aug. 13 -- Yardarm Knot Fisheries will pay $11,000 to settle alleged Clean Water Act violation at its Red Salmon Cannery in Naknek, Alaska.

The company has a permit to discharge fish processing waste into the Naknek River, but a June 2003 inspection found the company was violating its permit, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Aug. 10.

The company did not properly treat seafood waste and ensure waste it discharged into the river exceeded one-half inch in diameter. It also failed to conduct daily inspections of the facility´s conveyance system and properly maintain the system, according to EPA´s complaint.
