Ariz. becomes 6th state given authority to regulate sewage sludge

SAN FRANCISCO (April 2) -- Arizona has become the sixth state to gain regulatory authority over its sewage sludge program.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved the state´s application to administer the program April 1. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will have regulatory authority over the land application, surface disposal and landfilling of sewage sludge. State rules prohibit the incineration of sewage sludge.

Arizona requires entities that land-apply sewage sludge to register the fields where they will apply the material before application. The EPA´s approval of the state´s sewage sludge program will not affect Indian territories.
