EPA implements new rule for motorcycle emissions

WASHINGTON (Dec. 24) -- The federal government has implemented a rule that sets the first new emission standards for motorcycles in 25 years.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Mike Leavitt signed the final rule Dec. 23. Starting in 2006, it will require manufacturers to reduce emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides by 60 percent. It also will adopt standards in 2008 requiring the control of fuel loss through fuel hoses and fuel tanks, which will save some 12 million gallons of fuel annually. When the rule is in full effect, it will reduce hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide emissions by about 54,000 tons per year.

Highway motorcycles produce more harmful exhaust emissions per mile than cars and large sport utility vehicles, Leavitt said. The new standards also will include previously unregulated small scooters and mopeds. The new emissions controls will cost and average of $75 per motorcycle, which cost an average of $10,000, he said.
