3 companies join PSI to address consumer waste impact

June 25 -- Three companies have joined the Product Stewardship Institute to help address the environmental impacts of consumer products.

Waste Management Inc., EXP Pharmaceuticals Services Corp. and Mercury Technologies of Minnesota have signed on as PSI Sustaining Partners. The PSI offers three levels of corporate partnership -- Founding Partners Sustaining Partners and Partners. Joining the PSI will give the companies an opportunity to help shape public policy by participating in stakeholder discussions, said Scott Cassel, PSI executive director.

Waste Management is a Houston-based integrated solid waste management corporation, which is involved in national dialogues on the disposal of fluorescent lamps, pharmaceuticals and medical sharps.

EXP Pharmaceutical Services, specializing in processing expired pharmaceutical products, serves hospitals, government institutions and chain pharmacies.

Mercury Technologies is a Minnesota-based fluorescent lamp recycling company that has developed technology to safely recycle and process mercury from fluorescent lights.

"PSI seeks corporate partners that can provide sustainable solutions that protect our environment from the lifecycle impacts of consumer products," Cassel said. "Safely managing mercury, pharmaceuticals, and other problem wastes is a valuable product stewardship service, and will ultimately lower costs for local governments."
