Mack will move its highway vehicle production from New River Valley, Va., to the Pennsylvania site, where it already makes refuse and construction trucks, the company said. The move will begin in September and will be finished by November.
"Due to prevailing market conditions, the company expects that rather than adding personnel in Macungie, it will instead support the increased production by reducing the number of down weeks," the company said in a statement.
"The transfer is expected to result in an employment reduction at the NRV plant, which will continue to produce Volvo Trucks North America´s entire product range, but it is too early to quantify the impact," according to the statement.
Mack, part of the Volvo Group, said the move will allow the company to take advantage of efficiencies from consolidated assembly and provide a "brand-unique" environment for Mack customers.
