NYC collecting household hazardous waste at curb following Hurricane Sandy

The New York City Department of Sanitation has begun collecting household hazardous waste at the curb as part of the cleanup following Hurricane Sandy.

In cooperation with the U.S. EPA, residents are being encouraged to put solvents, paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, bleach and other items at the curb for pickup.

"The EPA is urging people to separate potentially hazardous products from their regular trash and place them on the curb in areas that were impacted by the flood waters from Hurricane Sandy, where they will be picked up," said Judith Enck, regional administrator for the EPA.

The curbside pickup is happening only in the areas impacted by the storm.
