Louisiana parish could require contracts for rural trash pickup

Rural residents and businesses in Ouachita Parish, La., could be required to contract with a trash collector in an effort to rid the area of illegal dumping.

Currently, contracting for trash pickup is voluntary, the News Star in Monroe, La., reported. But the area has seen continuing problems of large item dumping in ditches and canals. An amendment to require a contract was introduced to the Ouachita Parish Police Jury Nov. 19, the article indicates.

If the ordinance is approved, violations could result in fines, imprisonment and/or community service, according to the article.
