Louisville, Ky., debuts solar-powered trash containers

The city of Louisville, Ky., will install solar-powered trash and recycling receptacles on several downtown streets as part of the city's sustainability efforts, Louisville news organization WDRB reported.

Compacting receptacles similar to Louisville's, which have a capacity five times greater than traditional containers, have been cropping up in cities throughout the U.S. Because the containers don't need to be emptied as often, they can save cities fuel and manpower costs associated with more frequent collection trips.

Waste Management will provide 12 of the receptacles as part of its contract with the city, and Louisville's Downtown Development Corporation bought an additional 16 containers, the article indicates.
