Chicago has ordered 20 all-electric garbage trucks, San Francisco-based Motiv Power Systems announced.
Loadmaster will provide the truck body and Detroit Chassis will install the electrical system on the refuse chassis, the company said. The total contract is for up to $13.4 million, the company said.
Motiv's system has been used on an all-electric bus, but this is the first time the system has been used for a garbage truck. The electric trucks will weigh 52,000 pounds and have a range of more than 60 miles, the company said.
"We are thrilled that Chicago is driving the push for electric refuse trucks and that our [electronic system] can be employed to create these revolutionary vehicles," said Shyam Nagrani, vice president of business development and marketing for Motiv. "These [electric] refuse trucks will provide the streets of Chicago with quiet, emissions-free garbage pick-up, without submitting residents to excessive diesel pollution or loud noise."
A previous version of this article misstated the price of the contract.
