Maryland contractor fined for illegal dumping

A Hyattsville, Md. contractor pleaded guilty to unlawfully disposing solid waste and performing construction without obtaining an approved sediment control plan, the state's attorney general announced.

American Contractors Inc. was sentenced to pay $14,290 in restitution for the clean-up of the waste and was fined $30,000. The company was also placed on probation for five years.

The Calvert County Department of Planning and Zoning caught the dumping after investigating complaints of illegal dumping. Investigators found C&D debris, mattresses, toilet fixtures and other debris dumped.

"Illegal dumping and failure to control sediment run-off can inflict a costly blight on any community," said Douglas Gansler, Maryland's attorney general, in a statement. "This office is committed to the enforcement of these laws that protect the health and home values of Maryland property owners."
