AT&T sets world record for cell phones recycled in one week

AT&T said its customers recycled 50,942 cell phones in a week, which was recently certified as a new world record by Guinness World Records.

The record happened after the company started a new trade-in program where consumers can choose to donate the phone to a charity or earn AT&T credit for future purchases. The company said the program keeps working phones from landfills.

In 2011, the company said they collected about 3 million cell phones for recycling and expect to surpass that number in 2012. Texas recycled the most devices in 2011, with customers returning 5,879 phones to stores for recycling, the company announced.
