Orlando residents to receive first batch of single-stream recycling carts

Goodbye, source-separated bins. Hello, single-stream recycling carts.

That's what Orlando, Fla., residents are saying as the city begins to roll out nearly 24,000 96-gallon recycling carts on Nov. 14, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Southeast Orlando will receive the first batch of carts, with the rest being delivered throughout the city through early January.

Orlando's conversion to single-cart recycling, as it calls it, will help nearly double the 33,000 tons of recyclable material already diverted, Jimmy Rodriguez, manager of Waste Management Inc.'s Recycle America processing facility at the county landfill, told the newspaper.

Florida has a state law to increase its household recycling to 75% by 2020. The current rate is 31%.
