So, you want to know what it takes to make your company's facility landfill free? General Motors Co. has some ideas.

The Detroit-based automaker, with its 102 landfill-free facilities and 90% recycling rate of worldwide manufacturing waste, recently released a downloadable blueprint (see link at right) for companies to glean best practices.

In the blueprint, GM gives nine steps on how to make plants and facilities landfill free such as tracking waste data, defining zero waste, prioritizing waste-reduction activities, engaging employees and building a sustainability culture, strengthening supplier partnerships, and resolving regulatory challenges.

"Whether a company is large or small, a landfill-free journey involves a long-term view, bottom-line focus, innovative thinking and ongoing collaboration," Mike Robinson, GM vice president of sustainability and global regulatory affairs, said in a statement.

GM has a goal of achieving landfill-free status at 125 of its facilities worldwide by 2020.
