The U.S. EPA has proposed not installing a groundwater treatment system at a superfund site in New York state after recent monitoring data shows contamination levels have dropped significantly.
The agency said it was planning on installing two groundwater treatment systems at the Liberty Industrial Finishing superfund site in Farmingdale, N.Y., located 38 miles east of New York City. The site was home to various industrial operations including aircraft part manufacturing. The first system is in operation and the second was to clean contamination from the nearby Farmingdale Plaza Cleaners.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is cleaning the site of the former dry cleaners and new data shows the levels of contamination has dropped significantly, the EPA said.
The EPA has also lifted restrictions on the site to allow it to be used for recreational purposes.
