RW Products LLC of Wheeling, W.Va., has been fined more than $21,000 for the illegal disposal of 800 gallons of waste drilling mud in Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection announced.
The incident happened in Bradford County, Pa., on the northern side of the state, in December 2011, the agency said.
"A driver for RW Products admitted that he intentionally dumped a load of oil-based waste drilling mud onto the ground," said Patrick Brennan, north-central waste management program manager for the DEP, in a statement. "This violated the Pennsylvania Solid Waste Management Act and the department's penalty reflects this blatant disregard for the environment."
The material was dumped at a Talisman Energy facility and that company conducted cleanup of the contaminated soil, the DEP said. The material was properly disposed at the Hyland Landfill in Angelica, N.Y.
The driver pleaded guilty to a second-degree misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 17.
